Human Growth Hormone (HGH): Benefits, Risks and Myths

Athletes' Use of HGH, a Physical and Performance Enhancement Drug

Somatropin, or recombinant human growth hormone (HGH), is a common physical and performance enhancement drug. It is a manufactured form of somatotropin, or growth hormone (GH), a substance that is produced naturally in the human body. Somatropin is an exact replica of natural GH.

There are three major effects of Human Growth Hormone that are desirable for bodybuilders and athletes. First, HGH promotes the development of new muscle cells. A person’s number of muscle cells is determined by genetics. After puberty, the level of GH a person’s body secretes declines, and muscle cell development ceases. A person can then only work to increase the size of these cells through weight training.

Steroids are different from HGH in that steroids increase the size of muscle cells, mostly through water weight. When a person uses HGH as a performance enhancement drug, they gain only lean muscle mass. The weight gain is slow, usually between one and two pounds of lean muscle every two to three weeks. However, by taking HGH and developing new muscle cells, a person can alter their genetic capabilities and achieve results that wouldn’t be possible without HGH treatment.

The second desired effect of HGH treatment is increased energy and metabolism. GH is produced in the human body naturally at its highest levels during youth and puberty. It is primarily responsible for the heightened levels of energy in children. However, the amount of GH that a body produces and secretes declines as a person ages.

Supplementing Human Growth Hormone can raise your energy levels and metabolism. It can cause you to feel energized and burn fat. In fact, HGH is a precursor to IGF-1; IGF-1 secretion is caused by HGH secretion. IGF-1 forces your body to seek energy from your fat reserves rather than from the food you consume. This results in significant weight loss even in inactive periods.

The third desired effect of HGH treatment is that it shortens the amount of time needed for recovery between workouts. It can strengthen joints and ligaments and heal damaged tissue. Additionally, because it is a natural substance, it is not as easily detected as other performance-enhancing drugs.

As a pharmaceutical drug, HGH is used for many different conditions, including GH deficiency. It is prescribed by endocrinologists most often for children who suffer with growth retardation or deficiency. For this purpose, HGH treatment is FDA-approved. However, HGH is not FDA-approved as a performance or physical enhancement drug in adults. Therefore, persons seeking to use HGH for these purposes must purchase HGH on the black market.

There are some things to remember when choosing a black-market HGH drug. First, oral and nasal forms of HGH have not been proven to be effective methods of treatment in medical studies. HGH must be taken intravenously in order to cause desired effects. It is most often purchased in lyophilized powder form, and it must be mixed with distilled water prior to injection. Once mixed, HGH must be kept refrigerated.

Second, the only effective means of manufacturing HGH is by protein secretion or mouse-cell technology. These methods create HGH that is identical to naturally-produced GH. If manufactured HGH isn’t identical to natural GH, it is not effective. Another common method of HGH manufacture is through inclusion-body technology. Inclusion-body technology does not produce a product identical to natural GH.

The third thing to watch out for when purchasing HGH is a form of HGH called cadaver-GH. This is a primitive method of HGH treatment in which GH is taken from the pancreas of a cadaver. In addition to causing Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, cadaver-GH can cause the transference of many diseases.

While there are some potential side effects of HGH treatment, they are rare. Most often, these side effects are caused by using HGH for longer than recommended in larger-than-recommended dosages. These include hypoglycemia, aromeglia, extended belly, carpal tunnel syndrome, and joint pain.

There’s a common myth surrounding HGH use that claims that people who use HGH have abnormal bone growth. This is not true. After puberty, the ends of long bones fuse and are no longer able to grow.

Growth Hormone Reduces Belly Fat and Improves Function in Postmenopausal Women
Source: medscape.com

June 10, 2005 (San Diego) — Twice-daily administration of high-dose recombinant human growth hormone–releasing hormone (GHRH) 1,44-amide stimulates growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) production, decreases abdominal visceral fat, and improves physical performance in postmenopausal women, according to the results of a prospective three-month pilot study presented here at ENDO 2005, the 87th Annual Meeting of the Endocrine Society.

"For every decade of life after the age of 20 years, there is about a 14% decline in spontaneous growth-hormone release, and many of the changes that occur as a result of normal healthy aging in adults resemble those of growth-hormone deficiency," Arthur L. Weltman, PhD, colead investigator, told Medscape.

Dr. Weltman is a professor with joint appointments in the departments of Human Services and Medicine at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

According to Dr. Weltman, these changes can include reductions in muscle mass, strength, and exercise capacity; increases in abdominal visceral fat; unfavorable lipid and lipoprotein levels; loss of bone mineral density; and increased risk of vascular disease.

Injections of GHRH can be used to stimulate the release of endogenous GH, and its administration in aging healthy adults may yield an amelioration of negative effects similar to that associated with GH-replacement therapy in deficient patients.

"In a previous study, we gave GHRH to older men, and the resulting increase in growth-hormone levels reduced visceral fat and improved functional performance," said Dr. Weltman. "So we did a follow-up study to establish whether the same holds true in older women."

In the study, 10 postmenopausal women volunteers underwent a baseline evaluation then received twice-daily subcutaneous injections of 1 mg of GHRH for three months.

Results showed that GHRH therapy almost doubled mean overnight GH concentrations at one and three months (increase, 98% ± 14%; P < .005) and yielded a significant and sustained increase of IGF-1 concentrations from the second week to the end of the study (71% ± 3.5%; P < .005), relative to baseline levels.

At three months, the women had achieved a 16% reduction in abdominal visceral-fat mass (95% confidence interval [CI], 2% - 28%; P < .029) and 14% ± 5% increase in tritiated water space ( P < .025).

Physical performance also was improved, as demonstrated by significant decreases in the time required to walk 30 m (14%; 95% CI, 9% - 19%; P = .015) and to climb two flights of stairs (9%; 95% CI, 4% - 13%; P = .003).

"GHRH therapy for three months stimulated GH and IGF-1 production, altered body composition, and improved physical function in these postmenopausal women," Dr. Weltman noted.

"Our findings are part of an accumulating body of evidence that suggests that administration of growth hormone or GHRH tends to lower visceral fat and improve function, not only in growth hormone–deficient individuals, but also in normal healthy aging adults and even obese patients."

The investigators report no pertinent financial disclosures.

Research shows growth hormone effective in metabolic disorders
Source: Datamonitor Newswire

Researchers in Sweden have discovered that growth hormone treatment may improve symptoms of multiple metabolic disorders in postmenopausal women, suggesting a possible new treatment option for this patient group.

14 Mar 2005, 15:36 GMT - These findings, published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, demonstrate the important role growth hormone (GH) treatment may play in reducing serious metabolic conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease.

Typically, GH is known for its importance of the growth of a child, but it also has powerful metabolic effects in adults.

Dr. Gudmundur Johannasson and his research team at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Sweden investigated the effect of GH treatment for one year on insulin sensitivity in postmenopausal women with abdominal adiposity. They also studied the effect of the hormone on abdominal fat, hepatic fat content and size of the thigh muscle area.

The team discovered that the GH treatment in postmenopausal women significantly reduced their intra-abdominal fat, increased thigh muscle area, reduced low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol concentration, and improved insulin sensitivity. The placebo group did not experience these positive results.

"Previous research has shown that obesity is linked to metabolic syndrome, which has several known risk factors including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, increased levels of fasting glucose and an increase in waist circumference." Johansson explained. "The results of our study suggest that growth hormone treatment has a favorable effect on multiple metabolic disorders associated with abdominal obesity in postmenopausal women."

This information may offer a treatment option for doctors who treat postmenopausal women and may reduce the metabolic consequences associated with intraabdominal fat accumulation.

The Fountain of Youth

Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is a hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland in the brain. HGH promotes tissue repair, cell regeneration in the bones, muscles and vital organs, and supports the immune system in combating infection and disease.

As the body's cells die off, HGH acts as a "trigger" to ensure that replacement cells are healthy and readily available. As we age, our HGH levels decline, causing our cell replacement levels to reduce to a fraction of the levels of our youth.

The results? Sagging skin, graying hair, muscle loss, weight gain (especially around the waist), slower memory, reduced energy levels, illness and disease.

The exact reason why the pituitary gland's production of HGH fails so rapidly remains a mystery. By the age of forty, nearly everyone is deficient in HGH, and by eighty years of age, the body's production has usually diminished by 90-95%.

Look and Feel Younger, Happier and More Energetic

As Seen on CNN, Oprah, and Dateline...

From its well-documented anti-aging properties to its effect on athletic performance, it's no wonder HGH has been extensively covered by CNN, Newsweek, Dateline, Oprah Winfrey, and the American Journal of Medicine.

A recent study by the New England Journal of Medicine showed that users of HGH experienced a dramatic decrease in body fat and increased lean muscle mass.

Other benefits of HGH include:

-improved skin elasticity and a reduction in wrinkles
-regrowth of thicker, healthier hair
-greater cardiac output with renewed energy and vitality
-more restful, restorative sleep
-increased libido and enhanced sexual performance
-improved memory, sharper vision, and increased positive mood
-enhanced immune system with better disease resistance and rapid wound healing
-stronger bones and muscles, lower blood pressure, and decreased cholesterol

Medical issues and disease become more prevalent as we age. The kind of premature aging symptoms which happen to women can be different from men in some ways. Women who suffer from HGH Deficiency aka adult onset growth hormone deficiency (AGHD) notice a lot of changes in their body composition, muscle turns to fat at an accelerated rate, skin becomes thin and wrinkled, age spots increase, things tend sag, libido decreases, bones become thin and brittle and many other women specific issues. There can tend to be slight differences in the way women age and the way men age, however there are more similarities.

HGH Therapy for Women

HGH replacement therapy can help women who are genuinely suffering from medically categorized diseases associated with growth hormone deficiency and the adverse side effects of premature aging. Using HGH therapy women can slow down or even reverse these life threatening and challenging symptoms. As the old saying goes an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Are you suffering from any of these symptoms?

The Mind and Body: Motivation, Energy & Depression.

1. Low HGH levels in the human body has been associated with low energy levels, depression, chronic fatigue and also low motivation for embracing life vigorously. Increasing ones HGH levels through therapeutic HGH injections including a proper diet and exercise with a pharmaceutical grade vitamin and mineral supplement program, has been shown to increase energy, motivation and help women overcome some of the symptoms of depression, low energy levels, fatigue and so forth.

Muscle Strength, Injury and Recovery

2. Low HGH levels has been associated with slow healing and recovery from general living and especially injury and surgery. women who have undergone surgery have reported better and faster healing results and shorter recovery time on average when using therapeutic HGH injections.

Although using HGH is specifically illegal for competitive body building and sports enhancement, many professional female sports athletes and Olympic competitors have reported significantly faster recovery time from intense work out sessions when using HGH: including improved muscle strength, increased energy levels, stamina and overall performance.

Some women notice as they age it becomes harder to keep the accumulation of fat off their bodies and that their metabolisms decline and hunger increases. Some women have complained that each year after forty a pound of muscle turns into a pound of fat.

HGH, Women, Insomnia and poor sleep.

3. Insomnia seems to be a "normal" part of aging for many, but it causes problems for women and dysfunction in their lives. Some women who have had sleep problems or fatigue during the day, have reported that when they used HGH they slept much deeper during their sleeping period and were less likely to wake up tired, some reported feeling very refreshed when they woke up in the morning after 8 to 9 hours of sleep when on a program involving HGH replacement therapy. As a result of having a much deeper restful sleep, the women using the HGH replacement therapy noticed they had less fatigue and mood swings during the day, they found their mental focus was sharper and more balanced.

HGH Mental Balance & Focus

4. Some women who experience serious mood swings, memory problems and/or mental clarity issues, have indicated when they used HGH replacement therapy these issues were lessened, decreased or disappeared. Studies have shown HGH, Growth Hormone regenerates brain cells.

HGH & Weight, Obesity and Weight Management.

5. Unfortunately it is typical as we age for our metabolism to slow down (and sometimes our hunger increases or decreases significantly), this is not necessarily the case with all women, but given this general trend (as we age) and the poor nutrition of average Americans, obesity has gotten out of hand with 30% of American women in many areas of the country suffering from this life threatening disease. Yes as hard as it might seem for some, obesity is very serious and it has been linked to the acceleration of disease, cancer and premature aging.

Many variables are involved with weight gain, there is a very strong link with weight problems (too much weight or not enough weight) in individuals over the age of 35 and low levels of HGH. Weight problems are a very complex thing, but many women with weight problems who have gone on HGH therapy have reported very successful progress in regaining normal weight. women with too much fat on their bodies have reported HGH has helped to reduce this fat and increase muscle mass, while women with too little muscle mass and fat on their bodies have reported HGH therapy has brought them to more normal levels. There seems to be a normalizing effect from HGH replacement therapy.

HGH Female Sexual Libido, HGH & the Female Vagina

6. Loss of interest in sex or having low libido is unfortunately a negative side effect of aging in women. Women with a low libido, vaginal dryness, loss of sexual stamina and low sexual interest have reversed these negative side effects of sexual dysfunction using HGH replacement therapy.

Male and Female Sexual Energy & Drive

As we age we find our sex drives decreasing, whereas in women their sexual peak comes in their middle and late 30's. There are many factors involved in sexual dysfunction despite the many variables, Women using HGH replacement therapy have reported positive sexual improvement with HGH therapy.

HGH & Premature Aging

7. Studies have shown that chronic or persistent medical problems associated with premature aging have been diminished or reversed in women using HGH Human Growth Hormone replacement therapy. As we age our hormone levels decline, it has been found that Women with a genuine medical deficiency in HGH have experienced the slowing down or even the reversing of many of the negative side effects of premature aging.
